New rear glass, set and sealed, with the defroster reconnected.
Whether it happened overnight in a parking lot or a branch came down in a storm, the first hour matters. Take a few photos for your insurance claim, move anything valuable out of the car, and cover the opening with heavy plastic and painter's tape so rain doesn't get into the interior or the door. Then give us a call, and we'll find the right glass for your vehicle and schedule the replacement.
Unlike a windshield, which holds together when it cracks, rear and side windows are made of tempered safety glass. It's heat-treated so that when it fails, it crumbles into small, dull-edged pebbles instead of large, sharp shards. That protects passengers, but it also means there's nothing left to repair.
Safety glass breaks into small pebbles by design, which is why the whole window has to be replaced.
Rear glass has more built in than most people realize: the thin lines of the rear defroster, and on many vehicles a radio antenna, a rear wiper, and the third brake light nearby. We remove what's left of the old glass, clean the frame, set the new window in fresh urethane, and reconnect the defroster and other parts so everything works the way it did before.
Door windows take a little more work because the broken glass falls down inside the door. We take off the inner door panel, clear out the glass and debris, install the new window on the regulator, and test it to make sure it rolls up and down smoothly and seals tight. Quarter windows, the small fixed panes behind the rear doors or in an SUV's cargo area, are replaced the same day whenever the part is available.
Many of our back and side glass calls come from break-ins in shopping center parking lots along Branch Avenue and from commuter lots near the Branch Avenue Metro station, along with storm damage from falling limbs in summer. We come to you, whether you're in Clinton, Waldorf, Brandywine, or Fort Washington, so you don't have to drive around with an open window.
